<image:title>Blog - Understanding Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria in ADHD</image:title>
<image:caption>The emotional tsunami: When RSD hits, it can feel like drowning. Overwhelming sadness, rage, shame, or anxiety that's so intense it's physically painful. And it doesn't just pass quickly—it can stick around for hours or days, replaying the perceived rejection on loop. The avoidance spiral: Not applying for jobs you'd be perfect for because you can't handle the possibility of rejection. Declining social invitations because what if you say something weird and everyone judges you? Ending relationships first before they can end you. It's self-protection, but it's also self-sabotage.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62bf2724fb013d3280b62445/4f8aeac5-cc98-4af7-af33-8a27cb2da05a/two+people+playing+chess%2C+ages+late+20s%2C+one+person+looking+nervous.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Understanding Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria in ADHD</image:title>
<image:caption>People-pleasing on steroids: Saying yes to everything. Overcommitting until you're burnt out. Constantly seeking reassurance. Suppressing your own needs to avoid any chance of disappointing someone. It's exhausting, but the alternative—potential rejection—feels worse. Perfectionism that stops you in your tracks: Setting impossible standards because if you can just be perfect enough, maybe no one will criticize you. Spoiler alert: this usually leads to procrastination, burnout, and even more anxiety because perfect doesn't exist.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62bf2724fb013d3280b62445/550b9fa5-751f-47e0-ba6b-92877ec7c57d/Someone+yelling+on+a+loudspeaker.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Understanding Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria in ADHD</image:title>
<image:caption>The shame voice that won't shut up: Internalizing every perceived rejection until you've built an entire belief system around how you're fundamentally unlovable, incompetent, or too much. That voice gets loud, and it gets mean. Relationship chaos: Misreading neutral interactions as rejection. Needing constant reassurance but also feeling guilty for needing it. Ending things before you get hurt. Having zero chill when someone's communication style changes even slightly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Every participant — aged 16–17 — described the mental health cost of feeling excluded, invisible, or misunderstood. Poppy put it plainly: “I had never ever seen a Black Autistic girl… it caused me loads of mental problems, like it gave me depression and anxiety.” Representation isn’t “nice to have.” It’s protective. Seeing people like you can be the difference between thriving and just barely making it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “Before People See the Autism, They See My Race”: Masking, Belonging, and the Reality for Black Autistic Girls in UK Schools - 2. Managing Social Expectations is Exhausting</image:title>
<image:caption>Masking meant constantly performing to keep friends, please teachers, and avoid discipline. Lily described socialising as “fighting for my life,” while SS said outings left her “exhausted” from keeping up the act. From the outside? They looked fine. On the inside? They were running on fumes.</image:caption>

As Maia said: “Before they see the autism, they’re always going to see my race.” You can’t separate race from disability or gender here — it’s all happening at once.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Noise, touch, textures — all could be overwhelming, but instead of support, the girls were sometimes labelled “crazy” or “a basket case.” For Poppy, having her hair touched wasn’t just a sensory violation; it was also a racial microaggression tangled up with Eurocentric beauty standards.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your feelings and sensory needs are valid. The pressure to conform is not a personal failure — it’s the weight of harmful, shitty systems. White supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism — these are not just buzzwords, they shape how you’re treated, how you’re expected to show up, and how much space you’re "allowed" to take up. Their impact on you is significant, but it is never a reflection of your worth. Finding your people — the ones who truly see you — can change everything. Unmasking in safe, affirming spaces isn’t weakness. It’s resistance. It’s healing. It’s yours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Transitions as Grief: Honoring the End of Summer in Neuro-affirming Ways (Because Change Is Hard, OK?) - Why Transitions Are Basically Emotional Landmines for ND Folks</image:title>
<image:caption>Change isn’t just about flipping a calendar page. Routines often provide a foundation of predictability, safety, and control for us. They help us regulate our sensory input, manage our anxiety, reduce our overwhelm, and manage our executive function challenges. When summer ends, the shift might mean: Earlier bedtimes and wake times that disrupt our internal rhythms New sensory experiences—different clothing textures, sharper smells, louder environments, or chaotic social settings that can be a nightmare for those of us who are sensory-sensitive Increased demands and expectations that can trigger demand avoidance (one big NOPE) or obsessive control needs (anxiety overload!) Loss of our favorite activities or regulation rituals that provided us with a sense of calm and comfort Bottom line: Change is HARD.These losses—big or small—can trigger feelings like sadness, frustration, confusion, anger, overwhelm, or even shutdown. It’s not just a mood or being dramatic. It’s your brain trying to keep you safe in a wild world and it’s okay to honor what’s ending and create space for the full range of feelings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Transitions as Grief: Honoring the End of Summer in Neuro-affirming Ways (Because Change Is Hard, OK?) - Rituals to the Rescue: Because Sometimes You Need a Little Ceremony (and Snacks)</image:title>
<image:caption>Rituals aren’t just for fancy weddings or cheesy Instagram posts. They’re your secret weapon for making transitions suck less. They give your brain some control, some meaning, and some dopamine joy moments reminiscing during all the “ugh” of change. Rituals help. They offer a sense of ceremony and control, Neurodivergent-Approved Ritual Ideas: Memory jars or boxes: Collect your summer trophies—photos, that weird seashell, the score chart from the mini golf set you killed at, Later, turn on the tunes and dig through them like a treasure hunt for your soul. Bonus points for making this a sensory-rich activity (touch, smell, sound all welcome). Goodbye ceremonies: Create a playlist of the songs that are imprinted with Summer 2025’s memories, write down your top 5 memories, watch a summer sunset one last time, enjoy some lightning bugs, eat that one snack or meal that screams “summer.” Make it yours. Don’t wanna? Skip it. Visual countdowns and social stories: Use calendars, timers, or apps to see the upcoming chaos coming. This helps your brain not freak out and your PDA side to chill with choices, not demands. Sensory anchors: Bring your sensory calm like a boss by breaking out your weighted blanket, noise-canceling headphones, that sweater so soft it’s basically a hug, or a simmer pot with herbs like cinnamon, apple and clove to bring those cozy-vibes. These can help regulate sensory input and offer grounding. New traditions: Create small rituals you look forward to like a “fuzzy socks inauguration day”, “Fall & Friends’ Apple Picking Trip”, “Fall’s first pumpkin spice latte” , or a “First day of fall” playlist or movie. Make a list and choose a few that feel joyful and accessible for you, or for those real fall-lovers, create a fall bingo card to check off and enjoy all season long!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Transitions as Grief: Honoring the End of Summer in Neuro-affirming Ways (Because Change Is Hard, OK?) - Tips for Teens & Adults Navigating ND Transition Land</image:title>
<image:caption>Look, whether you’re a teen struggling to convince your brain to care about school starting or an adult trying not to lose it on the first Monday back, here’s how to keep it together (mostly): Visual and sensory support FTW: Bullet journals, apps, or even just sticky notes everywhere. If it’s colorful and helps you plan, you’re winning. Anxious and want a plan? Social stories or self-scripted notes help prepare for what’s new or different; helping develop a plan of what to say or prepare to do is smart, no shame. Autonomy is your BFF: You’re the boss of your routines. Pick what to keep, what to toss, and when to do it.You get to decide when and how to implement new routines, select clothes that feel good sensory-wise, or plan your day with breaks the way you want it. For PDAers, this means fewer orders and more “hey, what do you want to do?” Get Creative: Incorporate creative play and self-expression. Whether it’s painting, singing, stimming, dancing, or just make a TikTok about hating change. True Story: it’s therapy and helps process feelings. Feel (and Validate) ALL the feels: Sad, mad, confused? Cry, scream, or binge-watch comfort shows guilt-free. Keep some constants: Preserve some routines and sensory supports to help anchor regulation through change. Favorite stim toys, routines, and cozy clothes are your lifelines. Grab ‘em and hold tight.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Back to School, Back to Me: Self-Care for Neurodivergent Folks in September - Personalized Self-Care</image:title>
<image:caption>Self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all, especially for neurodivergent brains. September is a great time to re-evaluate what actually helps you thrive. Some ideas: Quiet spaces: Identify a spot where you can decompress if the world feels too loud. Sensory tools: Noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, or fidget items can help regulate your system. Flexible routines: Build in extra breaks or adjust your schedule to match your natural energy cycles. Tip: Don’t be afraid to redefine “rest.” For some, rest might be movement, hyperfocus on a special interest, or even quiet social time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Back to School, Back to Me: Self-Care for Neurodivergent Folks in September - Routine Hacks</image:title>
<image:caption>Transitions are smoother when you prepare. Consider: Visual schedules: Seeing your day in blocks can reduce uncertainty. Reminders & alerts: Set notifications for important tasks or breaks. Gradual adjustments: Shift sleep, meal, or work times slowly to ease into new routines. ️ Tip: Automate what you can. Delegating decision fatigue (via routines, apps, or checklists) is a form of self-support, not laziness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Back to School, Back to Me: Self-Care for Neurodivergent Folks in September - Advocacy & Boundaries</image:title>
<image:caption>Neurodivergent self-care also means setting limits and asking for what you need: Speak up for accommodations at school, work, or home. Communicate your boundaries clearly—this isn’t selfish, it’s survival. Use “micro-advocacy” strategies: small adjustments that make a big difference in daily life. Remember: You don’t need to justify your needs with productivity. Your comfort and access matter because you matter.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Back to School, Back to Me: Self-Care for Neurodivergent Folks in September - Celebrate Your Neurodivergence</image:title>
<image:caption>As the rhythms of fall begin—school, work, and shifting routines—it’s natural to feel the weight of expectations. We want to remind you of something essential: Your brain is not broken. It’s beautifully wired—just not always supported in the ways it should be. Whether you’ve known you're neurodivergent for a long time, are just beginning to explore that possibility, or are parenting a neurodivergent child—this season is also an opportunity to reconnect with your strengths and celebrate what makes your brain extraordinary. Neurodivergent brains bring: Creative, out-of-the-box thinking Deep focus and unique insights Curiosity and pattern recognition Authenticity, empathy, and resilience These traits are powerful ways of seeing and engaging with the world—and we believe in neuroaffirming care that supports and honors the richness of neurodivergent experiences.</image:caption>

These are cognitively demanding tasks, and when we’re expected to do them perfectly, efficiently, and constantly — just to “have fun”? That’s not just exhausting. <image:title>Blog - Your Version of Summer Joy Is Enough - Joy Doesn’t Have to Be Loud or Social</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s this idea that summer joy needs to be high-energy: music blaring, groups laughing, sunlight everywhere. But joy for you might be… Watching a thunderstorm roll in while curled up with your pet. Listening to the same playlist on repeat because it feels safe. Here’s some of our favorites: ADHD/Anxiety 8D Sound Brainwashing & Donuts Music Therapy Motivation Station Recovery Peaceful Piano Focus Pocus Have one you love? leave it in the comments and we’ll add it! Playing your favorite game with headphones on and the curtains drawn. We love: Buddy Board Games KrazyDad Puzzles Jigsaw Planet Online Puzzles Scrabble Go Have a game you love playing? Share it in the comments! Walking alone at dusk when it’s cool, quiet, and empty. Your joy doesn't have to be loud to be real. It doesn’t have to involve people, travel, or leaving the house. It only has to feel good to you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Your Version of Summer Joy Is Enough - Special Interests Are a Summer Superpower</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s talk about hyperfocus and special interests—the way so many neurodivergent people find deep joy in exploring something intensely. Summer can give you space to dive headfirst into the things you love most. Whether it’s: Creating art based on a fictional universe Researching beetles or the culinary anthropology Building Minecraft or SIMS worlds for hours Organizing your books, your rocks, your beads, your brain That’s genuine, focused, sparkly joy. It doesn’t need to be justified, explained, or made into a productivity project.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Your Version of Summer Joy Is Enough - Rest Is Joy, Too</image:title>
<image:caption>Joy isn’t just excitement—it’s also ease. Safety. Calm. You are allowed to rest, even when everyone else seems to be out and about. You’re allowed to do less, move slower, say no. In fact, rest might be one of the most radical and beautiful joys you can claim—especially in a culture that tells neurodivergent people to “keep up” all the time. So if your best summer day is one where you stay in your comfort clothes, stim freely, and don’t talk to anyone unless you want to? That’s valid and that’s joy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Your Version of Summer Joy Is Enough - There’s No Right Way to Feel Good</image:title>
<image:caption>You are not broken for not loving the beach. You are not weird for choosing quiet over chaos. You are not failing because the “fun” things don’t feel fun to you. The world may tell you that summer joy looks a certain way—but it doesn’t. It looks like your joy. Joy is not a one-size-fits-all emotion. It’s not something you have to prove or perform. It’s deeply personal—and often deeply sensory, too. Your version of summer joy is not just “good enough.” It’s right. It’s worthy. It’s yours. So let yourself feel joy in whatever way your body and brain allow. Paint it. Repeat it. Name it. Celebrate it. Even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Summer overload doesn’t have to catch you off guard. Try creating a “sensory survival kit” you can carry with you or keep in your car or bag. A few things to consider: Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs for fireworks, traffic, and crowds. Handheld fans or cooling towels to manage heat and prevent meltdowns. Sunglasses or wide-brim hats to soften harsh sunlight. Soft, breathable clothing (tagless, non-clingy, natural fibers if possible). Comfort items like stim toys, essential oils, or textured jewelry. Having your tools on hand can be the difference between panic and peace. Check out our Summer Sensory Checklist and our template for designing your own Summer Sensory Checklist.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Summer Is a Sensory Nightmare (and You’re Just Trying to Keep It Together) - Give Yourself Permission to Opt Out</image:title>
<image:caption>You don’t have to go to the beach. You don’t have to love summer. You don’t have to smile through barbecues or parades if they drain you. Let go of the idea that summer should be fun in a certain way. If your happy place is indoors with blackout curtains and your special interest, that’s valid. If joy looks like avoiding the heat entirely, that’s valid too. This is your season too. You get to decide what works for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Summer Is a Sensory Nightmare (and You’re Just Trying to Keep It Together) - Take Nature on Your Terms</image:title>
<image:caption>Being outdoors can be calming—when you’re not battling sensory chaos. Try reframing outdoor time in ways that feel good: Walks at dusk or early morning (cooler, quieter, lower light). Visiting nature spots that are less crowded (weekday mornings, hidden parks, even your backyard). Stargazing at night or watching a thunderstorm from a cozy spot indoors. It’s not about avoiding nature—it’s about making space for it in a way that fits your nervous system.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Summer Is a Sensory Nightmare (and You’re Just Trying to Keep It Together) - Make Peace With Routine Disruption</image:title>
<image:caption>Summer often throws off our structure. School’s out, travel ramps up, people expect spontaneity. If you thrive on routine (many neurodivergent folks do), this can be destabilizing. Here’s what can help: Make a loose daily rhythm to keep some structure (meals, rest, movement, quiet time). Use visual planners or alarms if sudden changes throw you off. Ask for (or create) predictability wherever you can: knowing the plan for the day previewing events giving yourself prep time before transitions. A flexible routine is still a routine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Summer Is a Sensory Nightmare (and You’re Just Trying to Keep It Together) - Prioritize Emotional Cool-Downs</image:title>
<image:caption>Hot weather and sensory overload can escalate quickly. Having a meltdown or shutdown isn’t a failure—it’s your nervous system signaling distress. You can build in buffers that can help. Try: A dedicated quiet space (dim, cool, familiar). Weighted blankets or tight-fitting clothing if deep pressure helps regulate you. Calming inputs like soft music, fans, or grounding scents (lavender, peppermint). Knowing your signs of overwhelm early so you can take breaks before you hit the wall. The key is to be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to emotional regulation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Summer Is a Sensory Nightmare (and You’re Just Trying to Keep It Together) - Redefine Summer Joy</image:title>
<image:caption>Here’s the truth: your summer joy doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. You might love: Diving into a hyperfocus session on your favorite topic Reading fanfic with a cold drink by your side Gaming in the dark while the AC hums Making art, lining up your collections, or just sitting quietly with a pet Joy is personal. Joy is not seasonal. And you absolutely deserve it, even when the world feels too loud, too bright, or too fast.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For many autistic and otherwise neurodivergent folks, masking has been a lifelong survival strategy—often one developed unconsciously and reinforced by the world around us. But in recent years, conversations about unmasking have gained traction in both clinical and community spaces. While the concept of showing up more authentically is powerful, the journey is not simple—and it's certainly not one-size-fits-all. So let’s break it down.</image:caption>

Maybe do it alone or with someone safe. I often recommend movement: move in the way your body is craving for 30 seconds. I think I just rocked for 30 seconds, and it was a lot. It can be profound.”</image:title>

<image:caption>Here are some more self-compassion statements: Executive functioning challenges come with being an ADHDer living in a NT world. They are not a moral failing. It’s okay if my brain and tasks don’t jive. I am allowed to do them in my own way, and my own time, even if that means outsourcing. My sensory system is highly attuned to the world around me. I give myself permission to meet my sensory needs, as I feel safe to do so. I am having a hard time with this. It’s okay if verbal communication is inaccessible to me. I can communicate in other ways. It’s on society for making me feel less-than for the ways that I communicate. I am doing the best I can. May I give myself the compassion I need and be kind to myself in this moment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Reflections upon a neurodivergent Pride: A Guest Blog By Rainn Stone, LMSW, GTC</image:title>
<image:caption>Before I knew the words ADHD, Autistic, or Trans, I knew the word wrong. I am trans non-binary and AuDHD none of which I understood until my 20’s. With it being June and Pride Month, I always find myself flooded by emotions this time of year- especially these last few years being Pride months that almost never existed- Pride months Rainn got to be a part of. See, a few years ago I could have never imagined openly owning both my neurodivergent and queer identities- I didn’t even have the words for them. I was still trying to perfect the part of neurotypical straight cis girl (a role of which I will NOT be revising,) still using my deadname, the wrong pronouns, and hating myself for not understanding why I just couldn’t be the person everyone expected. Why did being called Miss make me want to scream and cry? Why did my “female coded” voice and body make me want to claw my way out my skin? Why could I thrive as a therapist but not make a friend despite my best efforts? Why did it seem like everyone got some kind of handbook on how to be a human but me?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rainn is a therapist and Neurodivergent Coach at their practice, Rainny Days Counseling Counseling. They specialize in Neurodivergence, LGBTQIA+ folx including gender affirming evaluations, trauma, children and adolescents, and work from an somatic and attachment, and self, social and body liberation lens. As a late diagnosed AuDHDer and an openly trans therapist Rainn knows the difficulty of feeling misunderstood and misunderstanding yourself and aims to help others know they are not alone. Rainn has a specific passion for intersectionality and believes we don't exist in a vacuum but rather are a messy galaxy of everything we have experienced internally and externally. Rainn's mission is to help queer folx feel seen and create spaces where we can move out of survival mode and into truly living. Thank you Rainn for your work and your willingness to share your skill and knowledge with the world.</image:caption>
