Meet the Clinician: Dr. Wong (she/her)

Disclaimers:

Land Acknowledgment: We live and work on the unseated territories of the Wahpekute and Chumash peoples, we pay respects to their elders past and present. We encourage folks to explore the ancestral lands they live and work on, and to learn about the Native communities that live there, the treaties that have been broken. If folks feel called, we encourage them to consider taking actions to support Native communities, reparations, and land back movements (see other resources at the end for more info).

A note on language: The language in the DSM, including the use of the word disorder (D in acronym), some find this harmful, while others prefer the language “disorder.” When this language is used, it is because, as mental health professionals, we need to use this same language when referring to “diagnoses” in the DSM. In addition some Autistics find the use of the level system helpful in identifying the level of support needed, while others view it as an overly simplistic way of defining something that’s fluid, and may feel it’s harmful and minimizing. The beauty is that each individual gets to choose what language feels validating and affirming to them. Inspired by Dr. Jennifer Mullan, we use the term, “therapy participant” rather than “client” or “patient,” as we work toward decolonizing therapy

Educational Purposes: The information presented here is for educational purposes, and not meant to diagnose, treat or cure medical conditions or challenges, including neurodivergence (including mental health challenges), or physical health.

A Holistic Approach: Understanding the Biopsychosocial Connection

Specializing in therapy and evaluations, Dr. Wong brings a biopsychosocial perspective to her work that focuses on the interplay between biological, emotional, cognitive, and social stressors.

She understands the profound impact of systemic oppression and minority stress on mental health, particularly for neurodivergent individuals, womxn, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ communities.

By continuously assessing for these factors, she helps clients identify the root causes of their challenges and identify effective strategies for addressing them.

Therapy Grounded in Depth and Humanity

In therapy, her work is rooted in models from psychoanalytic, existential/humanistic, trauma-informed, and mindfulness-based theories. She does not provide services focused on behavior modification or targeted interventions. Rather, Dr. Wong revels in empowering clients with the knowledge and tools to make sense of their experiences, develop a stronger sense of self, and make the best decisions for themselves.

Whether clients prefer a more guided approach with specific topics and homework or a free-flowing discussion, she tailors her sessions to align with each person’s unique needs. She actively engages with her clients, encouraging dialogue and feedback to shape the therapeutic process together.

Supporting the Neurodivergent and Deeply Feeling

Dr. Wong is a particularly good fit for ADHDers/AuDHDers, gifted people, the highly sensitive, super feelers, and creatives.

She has coined the term RUMNUT, which stands for:
Routine
Under-stimulating
Monotonous
Non-
Urgent

Tasks

As an ADHDer herself, she understands how hard everyday RUMNUTing is and can help you go WITH your neurotype’s natural tendencies and strengths instead of fighting it.

A Personal Note from Dr. Wong

In her own words: I think that my first-hand experiences as a neurodivergent, wiggly, intense, and hyper-empathetic human is my greatest strength. As you work with me, you will find that I am rather down-to-earth, always authentic, nurturing, active, clear, direct, and creative in the ways I choose to do therapy. I expect that the trust you have for me will be earned, not implied. I like to think of therapy as a journey of shared learning and discovery of your inner world.
