Services for Womxn

You aren’t hard to diagnose or support. The system just wasn’t built for you.

we see you and we know what you’re going through.

Since the beginning of ‘modern’ medicine, womxn have been dismissed, misdiagnosed, under-treated, and told their pain is either all in their heads or just something they have to deal with. The research, the tools, and the clinicians were never created or trained with you in mind.

Neuron & Rose Psychological Services was.

Founded by womxn and featuring an all-womxn clinical staff, we truly understand your lived experience and are here to support you in a world that undervalues your mental health. Our evaluations, therapy & support groups, and gender-affirming care weren’t just created with you in mind, they created for you and your unique needs.

Undersupported on purpose.

The System Wasn’t Built for You. At all.

Historically, clinical research in the medical and psychological fields has overwhelmingly used male subjects as the default. This wasn't by accident, it was by design. Now we’re stuck with diagnostic criteria, treatment protocols, and clinical assumptions about everything from ADHD to chronic pain, based on the male body. When womxn obviously didn't fit these protocols they were labeled as hysterical, anxious, dramatic, or adversarial. How many times have you been told to that it’s somehow your fault that you’re sick? You just need to diet and exercise, right?

From the neurodivergent side, things don’t look much better

Up to 80%

Womxn with autism are misdiagnosed up to 80% more often than men.

Conditions that are more frequently blamed include borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and anxiety.

5 years

Womxn are often diagnosed with ADHD 5 years later than their male counterparts.

Institutional Barriers to Care

The Burden of Masking

Girls are taught almost from birth to suppress, compensate, and perform neurotypicality. By the time many womxn seek the help of a clinician they've spent decades hiding the traits that define their internal experience. This exhausting invisible struggle is the entire reason they feel anxious, depressed and burned out, and it’s rarely accounted for in clinical assessments.

Socioeconomic Disparity

Womxn, particularly BIPOC, single parents, or those in lower-income brackets face compounding barriers to adequate mental health support. Undercoverage or lack of insurance, fewer paid sick days to attend appointments, challenges with childcare support, and an understandable and justified cultural mistrust of systems that have historically harmed them are just a few issues womxn face. Access is not neutral.

How Neuron & Rose is Different

10%

Womxns’ pain scores are 10% less likely to even be recorded by emergency department nurses.

Nurses also under-score womxn’s reported pain scores compared to the same responses for male patients.

Gender-affirmation is an afterthought

Even for mental health care, transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive individuals have the burden of ‘proving’ their identity. Gatekeeping is terrifyingly prevalent and and finding clinicians who understand the intersection of gender dysphoria with other neurodivergent or psychological experiences is usually a journey in itself.

Whether you're coming to us with a lifetime of "we can't find anything wrong," or you're a parent watching your daughter fall through the cracks of a system that never saw her, ours is a practice that was built to see you. Neuron & Rose exists because the healthcare system hasn't caught up yet and we’re not waiting around for it to. Every service we provide has been shaped by folx that have lived it and personally understand the intersectionality of gender, race, socioeconomic status, and neurodivergence. We don't apply a one-size-fits-all model based on the male mind and body; we’re here to help address what others can’t and won’t.
